'Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding.'  –William Paul Thurston

Intent

At Bramingham, we want all our children to become competent and confident mathematicians. We aim for them to be fluent in the fundamentals of maths and we recognise the importance of regular practice through planned consolidation. We know that success in maths builds upon a secure arithmetic base. The children will be able to make links between different areas of maths and be able to apply what they have learnt to increasingly challenging problems.  Key, subject-specific vocabulary will be taught and children will be able to use this when they explain their mathematical thinking.  We use errors and misconceptions as an essential part of learning. Children will be encouraged to question and deepen their own understanding. We encourage resilience and determination and the understanding that learning new areas can be challenging. All children will experience success in maths through careful differentiation.
