Our art curriculum is driven by an initial artistic exploration introduced at the start of each topic. This open starting point invites pupils to investigate ideas through core skills, take inspiration from artists, practise techniques, and reflect on their trials as they go. Students are encouraged to investigate, create, and develop their ideas towards a final outcome.
This core exploration forms the narrative thread for all learning, shaping the artists who will inspire them, the techniques they practise, and the criteria they use to evaluate their work. Each year group focuses on three areas: sketching; painting; and multi‑media. As pupils progress, they build on prior skills and knowledge, developing increasing confidence and creative independence.
To support coherence and progression, every topic is underpinned by a knowledge organiser outlining the core knowledge, key vocabulary, and disciplinary skills pupils are expected to master.
Our lesson structure is designed to ensure that learning is remembered and that children have ample opportunities to ‘think like a artist. Our lessons encourage curiosity and exploration. Talk for learning is actively taught and scaffolded to promote vocabulary and clear communication of ideas.
At Bramingham, we have broken core artistic skills into 4 categories:
- Inspire
- Explore
- Techniques
